Welcome to the CA ARCserve D2D r16 Update 4 Release Notes file. This Release Notes file contains important information about this update. This update includes the following enhancements:

• 4-KB sector disk support.
• Addition of a Test Email button in Email Settings.
• Email alerts for failed or crashed jobs are now sent with high importance.
• Addition of an Advanced Backup Settings field - Reserve Space on Destination.

2.0 Enhancements

CA ARCserve D2D has been enhanced to include:

• 4-KB sector disk support as the backup destination.

  To be able to support larger disks, hard drive manufacturers have introduced drives with 4-KB sector sizes. CA ARCserve D2D r16 assumed that the sector size of the backup destination disk was 512 bytes and it caused problems when backing up to a 4-KB hard drive. With this update, CA ARCserve D2D can now use these disks as the backup destination.

• A Test Email feature is added to the Email Settings dialog in the Preferences Settings.

  After you establish your email settings, you can test the settings using this feature by clicking the Test Email button. After a job runs successfully or fails, it is too late to receive an email alert for having the wrong settings. Therefore, this enhancement validates the settings and tries to send an email using the specified settings. If the email settings are valid, you receive an email indicating so. If the email settings are invalid, you receive a failure message.

• High importance email alerts for failed or crashed jobs.

  The email alerts that have a high importance level setting display a visual indicator of an exclamation point in their Inbox.

• The Reserve Space on Destination option is added to Advanced Backup Settings.

  This value indicates a percentage of the calculated space that is necessary to perform a backup. This amount of continuous space is then immediately reserved on the destination before the backup starts writing data and helps improve backup speed.

  Default: 10%.

  Example: Set the value to 10% and the current backup has 50 GB of data to back up. Before the backup starts writing data, it first reserves 5 GB of disk space. After the 5 GB of disk space is used up, it then reserves the next 5 GB of disk space. If the data remaining for the backup is less than 5 GB (suppose 2 GB are remaining to back up), then the remaining GB (in this example 2 GB) are reserved.

3.0 Issues Fixed

This update fixes the following issues:

• A problem with DST (Daylight Saving Time). After daylight saving time changes, CA ARCserve D2D scheduled time is switched one hour (forward when DST ends or backward when DST starts). For example, if you configure the daily backup at 9PM, after DST starts it becomes 8PM. The fix allows CA ARCserve D2D to adjust the scheduled time point to align with the clock time.
• A problem with the mail recovery destination mailbox selection. If there are numerous mailboxes on the Exchange server (for example, over 5000), when you perform Exchange mail recovery from the CA ARCserve D2D user interface selecting the destination mailbox does not work. Selecting the destination mailbox does not work because it takes a long time to load the mailbox list and can cause a web service timeout.
• A problem that causes the backup to fail due to insufficient destination free space even though the source data size is smaller than 90 percent of the destination free space after compression. The problem occurs if the destination is a removable device. (Test Fix T245723)
• A problem that causes failure of new credentials being sent to the CA ARCserve D2D proxy with policy when a user updates the VM credentials and the user redeploys the policy in CA ARCserve Central Host-Based VM Backup. The catalog then is not generated after the backup. (Test Fix T2D2855)
• A problem that causes CA ARCserve D2D backup to fail on Windows XP when Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) is installed on Windows XP. (Test Fix T5E5140)
• A problem that causes Exchange 2010 mailboxes to display as empty during a GRT Restore even though folders and mails exist in the mailboxes. (Test Fix T5E5141)
• A problem configuring and saving settings for automatic updates because you cannot select am/pm on the German OS. (Test Fix T5LF116)
• A problem that causes email alerts to display the wrong backup size. The size shown in the email alert is actually from a prior backup. (Test Fix T2D2861)
• A problem that causes a restore or catalog job to fail with the following error in activity.log:

  Activity.log: An unexpected exception error occurred in vmdkimgdll.dll

4.0 Known Issues

The following issues are known to exist in this update:

• A problem that if a volume does not have enough disk space, the backup job can fail with the error message "Failed to create snapshot for selected volumes". If the backup job fails, you can perform either task:

  • Free up some disk space on the volumes being backed up.
  • Reconfigure the Volume Shadow Copy settings to save shadow copy to a volume with sufficient free disk space.
• A problem occurs when integrating CA ARCserve Backup and CA ARCserve D2D, and you change the CA ARCserve D2D backup destination from a local drive to a remote network drive. If you continue to perform incremental backups to chain the two destinations, any attempt to then use CA ARCserve Backup to perform a backup to tape of the CA ARCserve D2D session from machine that hosts the second destination will not work.

5.0 Limitations

The following limitations are known to exist in this update:

• CA ARCserve D2D r16 with Update 4 installed can only be managed by CA ARCserve Central Applications r16 with Update 4 installed.

6.0 Prerequisite Tasks

Before you install this update, verify that CA ARCserve D2D r16 is installed.

To install this update, do the following:

1. Open CA ARCserve D2D.
2. From the top right corner of the Home Page, click Help, and then click Check for Updates.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install and apply the update.
